Aaron Burr Quotes

A collection of quotes by Aaron Burr.

Aaron Burr Jr. (1756–1836) was an American lawyer and politician, best known for serving as the third Vice President of the United States under President Thomas Jefferson. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Burr grew up in a prominent family and received a quality education. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) and later studied law, becoming a successful attorney.

Burr's political career began in the early 19th century when he was elected to the New York State Assembly. He then served as New York State Attorney General from 1789 to 1791. In 1791, Burr was elected to the United States Senate, where he represented New York for one term. As a senator, he showed independence and often defied party lines.

Perhaps Burr's most notable accomplishment was becoming the vice president from 1801 to 1805. However, his political career took a downturn when he was involved in a controversial duel with his political rival, Alexander Hamilton, in 1804, resulting in Hamilton's death. This duel tarnished his reputation and ended his political aspirations.

After leaving the vice presidency, Burr was accused of treason for allegedly conspiring to establish an independent country in the western territories of the United States. Although he was acquitted, it further damaged his public image. Burr spent his later years mostly in relative obscurity, occasionally practicing law and engaging in various unsuccessful business ventures. He died in 1836 at the age of 80, leaving behind a complicated legacy that encompassed both political success and personal tragedies.
