Alcee Hastings Quotes
A collection of quotes by Alcee Hastings.
Alcee Hastings was born on September 5, 1936, in Altamonte Springs, Florida, and was an American politician. He pursued his higher education at Howard University and received his bachelor's degree in zoology and botany in 1958. Later, he earned a J.D. from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University College of Law in 1963.
Hastings entered politics in the 1970s, serving as a judge in Florida's Broward County Circuit Court. In 1979, he became the first African American federal judge in the state of Florida, appointed to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida by President Jimmy Carter.
However, in 1989, Hastings became the first federal judge to be impeached and removed from office since 1936. The impeachment resulted from charges of bribery and perjury during a trial in 1981, although he was acquitted in a criminal trial pertaining to the same charges. After his removal from the judiciary, Hastings successfully transitioned to a career in politics.
In 1992, he was elected and served as the Democratic representative for Florida's 23rd congressional district. He continued to be re-elected, representing a redrawn 20th congressional district until his passing. Hastings served in the U.S. House of Representatives for nearly three decades, championing various causes, including civil rights, healthcare, and social justice.
Sadly, Alcee Hastings passed away on April 6, 2021, at the age of 84. His legacy in the political arena reflects his commitment to public service and advocacy for marginalized communities.
