A. Bartlett Giamatti Quotes
A collection of quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti.
A. Bartlett Giamatti was an American academic, scholar, and baseball executive. He was born on April 4, 1938, in Boston, Massachusetts. Giamatti earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University, where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, before obtaining his doctorate in English Renaissance literature from Yale as well. He taught English and comparative literature at Yale for several years and published several books and articles on literature.
In addition to his academic career, Giamatti had a significant impact on Major League Baseball. He served as the president of Yale University from 1978 to 1986. In 1986, he became the seventh commissioner of Major League Baseball. During his tenure, Giamatti oversaw major changes, including the implementation of a drug-testing policy and the banishment of Pete Rose from baseball due to gambling allegations.
Tragically, Giamatti's time as the baseball commissioner was cut short when he suffered a fatal heart attack on September 1, 1989, at the age of 51. His untimely death shocked the sports world, as he was highly respected for his intelligence, integrity, and commitment to the game. Despite his short tenure as commissioner, Giamatti's impact on baseball and his influence on the sport's integrity and values are still remembered and celebrated to this day.
