Carlos Salinas de Gortari was a Mexican economist and politician who served as the President of Mexico from 1988 to 1994. Born on April 3, 1948, in Mexico City, Salinas came from a prominent political family. His father had served as a minister of industry and commerce, and his brother later became a prominent politician as well.
Salinas studied economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) before obtaining a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1978. He then worked for the Mexican Ministry of Planning and Budget and rose through the ranks to become the Secretary of Planning and Budget under President Miguel de la Madrid.
During his presidency, Salinas implemented various economic reforms aimed at modernizing Mexico's economy, including the privatization of state-owned industries, trade liberalization, and measures to attract foreign investment. His administration also negotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States and Canada, which came into effect in 1994.
Despite his government's economic achievements, Salinas' presidency was overshadowed by allegations of corruption and electoral fraud. After leaving office, he faced numerous scandals and controversies, including the economic crisis in 1994 known as the "Mexican peso crisis."
