Erwin Griswold (1904-1994) was an American lawyer and legal scholar. He served as the Dean of Harvard Law School from 1950 to 1967 and later as the Solicitor General under Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon. Griswold was known for his commitment to civil liberties and freedom of expression, as well as his expertise in constitutional law. He argued several landmark cases before the Supreme Court, including the landmark decision in New York Times Co. v. United States, which affirmed the importance of press freedom.
