George Whyte-Melville was a Scottish author and politician, born on June 20, 1821, in Mount Melville, Fife, Scotland. He was the son of Major John Whyte-Melville and Lady Catherine Ann North. As a young man, he served as a captain in the Royal Company of Archers, a ceremonial unit that protected the British monarch.

Whyte-Melville is best known for his literary contributions, particularly his novels that focused on hunting, racing, and military themes set in Scotland and England. He authored around 30 novels and numerous poems during his writing career. His most popular works include "The Gladiators," "Holmby House," and "The Queen's Maries."
