Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (1912-1988) was an American aviator and a World War II flying ace. Born in Idaho, Boyington joined the Marine Corps in 1936 and became a fighter pilot. During the war, he commanded the legendary "Black Sheep Squadron" (VMF-214), achieving 28 aerial victories. Captured by the Japanese after being shot down, Boyington spent over a year as a prisoner of war. He was awarded the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross for his bravery and leadership. After the war, Boyington worked as an aviation consultant and wrote a bestselling autobiography titled "Baa Baa Black Sheep."
