Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, was a prominent figure in the Tudor era and a key player in the English Renaissance. Born on February 1517, he was the eldest son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, and Lady Elizabeth Stafford.

Surrey's upbringing was steeped in privilege and noble influence. Educated at the prestigious St. Paul's School, he went on to attend Cambridge University. His interest in literature led to his development as an accomplished poet and translator. Surrey is credited with introducing the sonnet form into English poetry, inspiring future luminaries like William Shakespeare.

In addition to his literary pursuits, Surrey attained military acclaim. He fought alongside his father at the Battle of Flodden in 1513 and later participated in various military campaigns. He championed the use of firearm infantry, considered a revolutionary tactic at the time.

However, his noble lineage and close connections to the royal court ultimately proved to be his downfall. Surrey's rivalry with Thomas Seymour, brother of Jane Seymour and uncle of Edward VI, led to his arrest on charges of treason in 1546. He was accused of displaying the royal arms without permission, a crime that was interpreted as an attempt to usurp the throne.

Despite an attempt to clear his name, Surrey was found guilty and sentenced to death. On January 19, 1547, at the young age of 29, he was executed on Tower Hill. His death marked a tragic end for a talented poet and a member of one of England's most illustrious families.
