James Irwin was an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer. Born on March 17, 1930, in Pennsylvania, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy, served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, and became a test pilot before joining NASA in 1966. Irwin participated in the Apollo 15 mission in July 1971, becoming the eighth person to walk on the Moon. He spent 18 hours outside the lunar module, exploring the Moon's surface and collecting valuable geological samples. Irwin retired from NASA in 1972 and later dedicated his life to religious pursuits. He passed away on August 8, 1991.
