Sessions was born in Selma, Alabama and grew up in Hybart. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, and later obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1973.

Before entering politics, Sessions worked as a practicing attorney in Alabama and served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama from 1981 to 1993. In 1996, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he represented Alabama until 2017.
