John Hanning Speke (1827-1864) was a British explorer and officer in the British Indian Army. He is best known for his exploration of East Africa, specifically his expedition to discover the source of the Nile River.

Born on May 4, 1827, in Somerset, England, Speke was educated at the prestigious Harrow School and then joined the British Indian Army in 1844. He participated in several military campaigns in India and eventually rose to the rank of captain.

In 1854, Speke joined an expedition led by British explorer Richard Francis Burton to discover the source of the Nile. While the expedition faced numerous challenges, including conflicts with local tribes and difficult terrain, Speke managed to push forward despite suffering from severe illness.

The defining moment of Speke's career came on July 30, 1858, when he became the first European explorer to reach Lake Victoria.
