John Lancaster Spalding was an influential American bishop, author, and educator. He was born on June 2, 1840, in Lebanon, Kentucky. Despite being orphaned at a young age, Spalding's thirst for knowledge led him to excel in his studies, and he eventually enrolled in the Pontifical North American College in Rome.

After being ordained as a Catholic priest in 1863, Spalding returned to the United States and dedicated himself to education. He established St. Mary's College in Kansas in 1869, which later became the University of Wichita. In 1877, he became the bishop of the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois.
