He served as a Union officer and colonel of the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment, famously leading his troops during the Battle of Gettysburg where they successfully defended Little Round Top. Chamberlain's heroic actions earned him the Medal of Honor. After the war, he became the Governor of Maine for four terms and later served as the President of Bowdoin College.
