Liu Xiaobo (1955-2017) was a Chinese literary critic, writer, and human rights activist. He played a pivotal role in promoting political and civil liberties in China. Liu Xiaobo was a prominent figure in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and later became a leading voice for democracy and free expression. He co-authored Charter 08, a manifesto advocating for political reform and democracy in China, for which he was sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of inciting subversion of state power. Liu Xiaobo received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010, but sadly passed away while serving his sentence.
