Mary Daly Quotes
A collection of quotes by Mary Daly.
Mary Daly (1928-2010) was an influential American feminist philosopher, theologian, and radical feminist activist. Born on October 16, 1928, in Schenectady, New York, Daly grew up in a conservative Catholic family. She later rebelled against the traditional beliefs of her upbringing, becoming one of the leading voices in feminist theology and philosophy.
Daly obtained a bachelor's degree in English from The College of Saint Rose in 1950, followed by a master's degree in English from Catholic University of America in 1954. She then pursued her doctoral studies at Saint Mary's College, Indiana, where she became the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in theology from the institution in 1953.
Throughout her career, Daly challenged the patriarchal nature of theology and its inherent sexism. She passionately critiqued the Catholic Church's oppressive treatment of women, advocating for a revisionist theology that recognized the equality and liberation of women. Her seminal works, including "The Church and the Second Sex" (1968) and "Beyond God the Father: Toward a Philosophy of Women's Liberation" (1973), revolutionized feminist theory and religious studies.
Daly also taught at Boston College, where she was controversially denied tenure due to her increasingly radical feminist views. Undeterred, she continued her activism and authored numerous books, addressing issues of sexism, heterosexism, and existentialism. Mary Daly passed away on January 3, 2010, leaving behind a powerful legacy in feminist thought and theology.
