Matthew Simpson (1811–1884), an influential American bishop, preacher, and educator, was born in Cadiz, Ohio. After completing his education at Jefferson College and Washington College, Simpson studied law and began practicing in Cadiz. However, his passion for the ministry led him to abandon his legal career after just three years.

Simpson was ordained in the Pittsburgh Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) and quickly gained recognition for his excellent oratorical skills. Throughout his ministry, he held various pastoral appointments, including serving as the President of Indiana Asbury University (later known as DePauw University) in Greencastle, Indiana. Simpson's effective leadership led to significant growth and progress at the university.

In 1852, Simpson was elected as a bishop in the MEC. He played a crucial role in the church's expansion and organization, particularly during the tumultuous period of the American Civil War. A strong supporter of the Union, he delivered a powerful eulogy for President Abraham Lincoln at the memorial service held in Springfield, Illinois, in 1865.
