Raised in a family with a rich history in Jewish scholarship, Schneerson studied in yeshivas (religious schools) in Russia and Germany, where he acquired a broad knowledge of Jewish law, philosophy, and mysticism. After marrying Chaya Mushka Schneerson in 1928, he moved to Berlin, but with rising antisemitism, they soon relocated to Paris and finally settled in the United States in 1941, escaping World War II and the Holocaust.

He dedicated his life to fostering Jewish education, outreach, and social initiatives. Under his guidance, Chabad-Lubavitch established thousands of educational centers, synagogues, and organizations worldwide.
