Nero Quotes
A collection of quotes by Nero.
Nero was a Roman emperor who reigned from 54 AD to 68 AD. He was born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus on December 15, 37 AD, in Antium, Italy. Nero was the only son of Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus and Agrippina the Younger, the sister of Emperor Caligula.
Nero's ascent to power began when his great-uncle, Emperor Claudius, adopted him as his own son and designated him as his heir. After Claudius's death, Nero became emperor at the age of 16. Initially, his rule was guided by his mother and tutor Seneca, but as he grew older, Nero began asserting his independence and exercising his authority.
During his early reign, Nero earned popularity through his administration's beneficial policies and the construction of several public works. However, as time passed, his behavior became increasingly erratic and cruel. He is best remembered for his perceived tyranny, which included the execution of adversaries, the suppression of political opposition, and the persecution of Christians during the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD.
Nero is also known for his love for the arts, particularly music and poetry, although many historians believe that his passion overshadowed his political responsibilities. Despite his various controversies, he left a lasting impact on Roman society with his extensive building projects, such as the Domus Aurea (Golden House) and the Nero's Nerva stadium.
Ultimately, Nero's reign ended in turmoil as a rebellion arose against him. Facing the threat of impeachment by the Senate, Nero chose to end his own life on June 9, 68 AD, at the age of 30.
