Pope Shenouda III was the 117th Pope of Alexandria and the Patriarch of the See of St. Mark. Born on August 3, 1923, in the Egyptian village of Asyut, he grew up in a devout Christian Coptic family. After completing his education, Shenouda joined the Coptic Orthodox Church and devoted himself to serving the faith.
In 1954, he was ordained as a monk and took the name Shenouda.
