He is best known for his record-breaking 1961 season, during which he hit 61 home runs for the New York Yankees, surpassing Babe Ruth's longstanding record of 60 homers in a single season. Maris played for the Yankees from 1960 to 1966 and also had stints with the Kansas City Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals.
