Smokey Robinson is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and former lead vocalist of the Motown group The Miracles. He was born on February 19, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan. Smokey Robinson gained his nickname from a childhood baseball teammate due to his love for westerns and a cowboy hero named Smokey Joe.

Robinson formed a singing group called The Miracles in 1955, and they soon signed with Motown Records. As the group's primary songwriter, Smokey Robinson penned numerous hits such as "Shop Around," "Tracks of My Tears," and "The Tears of a Clown."
