Tiberius Quotes
A collection of quotes by Tiberius.
Tiberius (42 BCE – 37 CE) was a Roman emperor who ruled over the Roman Empire from 14 to 37 CE. Born Tiberius Claudius Nero, he was the son of Livia Drusilla and Tiberius Claudius Nero. Tiberius grew up in a noble and influential family, with his mother later marrying Augustus, the first Roman emperor.
During his early military career, Tiberius proved himself to be a capable commander, successfully leading Roman troops in Germany and securing the northern borders of the empire. In 12 BCE, he married Augustus' daughter Julia, but their marriage was marked by strife and controversy, leading to their separation in 6 CE.
Following the death of Augustus, Tiberius reluctantly assumed the role of emperor. His reign was characterized by a cautious and sometimes repressive approach to governance, which led to accusations of cruelty and tyranny. Tiberius also faced several challenges, such as the ongoing conflict in the eastern provinces and the influence of his notorious chief advisor, Sejanus.
In 26 CE, Tiberius withdrew from Rome and spent the rest of his reign in seclusion on the island of Capri. During this period, his trusted official, Sejanus, was arrested and executed for treason. Tiberius died in 37 CE and was succeeded by his grandnephew Caligula.
Tiberius' reign remains a subject of historical debate, with some considering him a capable and pragmatic ruler, while others argue that his suspicious and reclusive nature tarnished his legacy.
