Wally Schirra (1923-2007) was an American astronaut and one of the original seven Mercury astronauts selected by NASA. Born in New Jersey, Schirra began his career as a naval aviator during World War II and the Korean War. He made history as the only astronaut to fly in all three of NASA's pioneering space programs: Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo.
