W.S. Gilbert (1836–1911) was a prominent English dramatist and librettist. He is best known for his collaboration with composer Arthur Sullivan in creating fourteen comic operas, including popular works such as "H.M.S. Pinafore," "The Pirates of Penzance," and "The Mikado." Gilbert's witty and satirical lyrics, combined with Sullivan's catchy melodies, garnered immense success and established the genre of the Savoy operas. Outside of his theatrical career, Gilbert also served as a municipal councilor and wrote several plays, poems, and novels.
