Zebulon Pike Quotes
A collection of quotes by Zebulon Pike.
Zebulon Pike was an American explorer and military officer. Born on January 5, 1779, in Lamberton, New Jersey, Pike grew up in a military family, which greatly influenced his career path. He joined the United States Army at the age of 15 and served in several locations throughout the country.
Pike's most notable expedition took place from 1805 to 1806 when he was tasked with exploring the western regions of the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase. During this journey, now known as the Pike Expedition, he explored the Upper Mississippi River, ventured into present-day Colorado, and became the first American to reach the summit of the mountain now known as Pikes Peak. Pike's notes and maps greatly contributed to the knowledge and understanding of the western territories.
Later, Pike also served as a military commander during the War of 1812 and the Creek War. However, his military career had some setbacks, particularly the controversial surrender at the Battle of York.
Tragically, Zebulon Pike's life was cut short at the age of 34 when he died in battle on April 27, 1813, during the War of 1812. Despite his untimely death, Pike's expeditions and military service left a lasting legacy in American exploration and paved the way for further westward expansion.
