Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany. She gained international fame posthumously with the publication of her diary, known as The Diary of a Young Girl or The Diary of Anne Frank. When Anne was four years old, she and her family fled to Amsterdam to escape the persecution of Jews in Germany. In 1942, due to the increasing threat of deportation, the Franks went into hiding in a small secret annex behind her father's office. Anne spent two years in hiding with her parents, sister Margot, and four other Jewish fugitives.

After the war, Anne's father, Otto Frank, survived and returned to Amsterdam, where he discovered his daughter's diary had been saved.
