I have left orders to be awakened at any time during national emergency, even if I'm in a cabinet meeting.
The tongue is the only instrument that gets sharper with use.
Washington Irving
There are no necessary evils in government. Its evils exist only in its abuses.
Andrew Jackson
As long as our government is administered for the good of the people, and is regulated by their will; as long as it secures to us the rights of persons and of property, liberty of conscience and of the press, it will be worth defending.
What struck me, in reading the reports from Sri Lanka, was the mild disgrace of belonging to our imperfectly evolved species in the first place. People who had just seen their neighbors swept away would tell the reporters that they knew a judgment had been coming, because the Christians had used alcohol and meat at Christmas or because ... well, yet again you can fill in the blanks for yourself. It was interesting, though, to notice that the Buddhists were often the worst. Contentedly patting an image of the chubby lord on her fencepost, a woman told the that those who were not similarly protected had been erased, while her house was still standing. There were enough such comments, almost identically phrased, to make it seem certain that the Buddhist authorities had been promulgating this consoling and insane and nasty view. That would not surprise me.
Christopher Hitchens
Heaven will be no heaven to me if I do not meet my wife there.
It's a damn poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word.
You must pay the price if you wish to secure the blessing.
Whatever dreams I have wished have come true.

He examined the chess problem and set out the pieces. It was a tricky ending, involving a couple of knights.'White to play and mate in two moves.'Winston looked up at the portrait of Big Brother. White always mates, he thought with a sort of cloudy mysticism. Always, without exception, it is so arranged. In no chess problem since the beginning of the world has black ever won. Did it not symbolize the eternal, unvarying triumph of Good over Evil? The huge face gazed back at him, full of calm power. White always mates.
George Orwell
Peace, above all things, is to be desired, but blood must sometimes be spilled to obtain it on equable and lasting terms.
The brave man inattentive to his duty, is worth little more to his country than the coward who deserts in the hour of danger.
In no sense do I advocate evading or defying the law. That would lead to anarchy.
Martin Luther King Jr.
Our Union: It must be preserved.
You wrestle one night, get up the next morning and fly out to the next city. You try to work out, you try to get some food into you and, lo and behold, you have to go work again. You are living out of a suitcase.
Bill Goldberg
[S]ome score of members of the High Court of Chancery bar ought to be --- as here they are --- mistily engaged in one of the ten thousand stages of an endless cause, tripping one another up on slippery precedents, groping knee-deep in technicalities, running their goat-hair and horse-hair warded heads against walls of words, and making a pretence of equity with serious faces ....
Charles Dickens
John Marshall has made his decision: now let him enforce it!
Set your goals high and don't stop until you get there.

Only one-fourth of the sorrow in each man's life is caused by outside uncontrollable elements, the rest is self-imposed by failing to analyze and act with calmness.

Our flag is red, white and blue, but our nation is a rainbow -- red, yellow, brown, black and white -- and we're all precious in God's sight.
Jesse Jackson
America is not a blanket woven from one thread, one color, one cloth.
So, I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you.
Paulo Coelho
A check or credit card, a Gucci bag strap, anything of value will do. Give as you live.

Great things happen in small places. Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Jesse Jackson was born in Greenville.
Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
When the doors of opportunity swing open, we must make sure that we are not too drunk or too indifferent to walk through.
My constituency is the desperate, the damned, the disinherited, the disrespected and the despised.
Racism as a form of skin worship, and as a sickness and a pathological anxiety for America, is so great, until the poor whites -- rather than fighting for jobs or education -- fight to remain pink and fight to remain white. And therefore they cannot see an alliance with people that they feel to be inherently inferior.
When we're unemployed, we're called lazy; when the whites are unemployed it's called a depression.
I hope we never get to the point that we put ourselves in Jesus' place. But when I read the New Testament basically, we get three mandates: to love God, to love each other, and to take care of the least among us. And I think this is at least a step in the right direction.
Bob Riley
You can't just make yourself matter and then die, Alaska, because now I am irretrievably different, and I'm sorry I let you go, yes, but you made the choice. You left me Perhapsless, stuck in your goddamned labyrinth. And now I don't even know if you chose the straight and fast way out, if you left me like this on purpose. And so I never knew you, did I? I can't remember, because I never knew.
John Green
