General Robert E. Lee was a prominent military leader during the American Civil War. Born on January 19, 1807, in Virginia, Lee graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served with distinction in the Mexican-American War and later became superintendent of West Point. In 1861, he resigned from the U.S. Army to lead the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Despite numerous victories, Lee's forces ultimately surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Lee died on October 12, 1870, and remains a controversial and influential figure in American history.
