Henry Wilson, born Jeremiah Jones Colbath on February 16, 1812, was an American politician and soldier. He was born in Farmington, New Hampshire, to poor and modest circumstances. At a young age, he started working as a laborer and later became an apprentice shoemaker. However, Wilson's potential was recognized, and he received an education, attending academies and teaching school before studying law.

Wilson entered politics as a member of the Whig Party, serving in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1841 to 1852. In 1855, he played a significant role in founding the Republican Party in Massachusetts, becoming one of its prominent members.

During the American Civil War, Wilson served as a brigadier general in the Union Army. He displayed exceptional organizational skills and was highly regarded by his troops. Wilson's military achievements propelled him into politics, and in 1872 he became the Vice President of the United States under President Ulysses S. Grant. Sadly, only two years later, on November 22, 1875, Wilson passed away due to a stroke.
