He ascended to the throne in January 1936 but faced a constitutional crisis later the same year due to his intention to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American. In order to marry Wallis, Edward abdicated the throne in December 1936, becoming the Duke of Windsor. After his abdication, he lived a relatively private life, residing mainly in France. Edward VIII passed away on May 28, 1972.
